The KINNAPA Development Programme, is proud to implement the WASH Improvement Programme as a transformative initiative aimed at enhancing the well-being of rural communities of Pastoralists and small-scale Agriculturalists in Tanzania. This program focuses on delivering reliable access to clean and safe water, promoting good hygiene and sanitation practices and protecting local environments.
Since 1998, KINNAPA Development Programme has been at the forefront of advancing access to clean and safe water, promoting sanitation and supporting hygiene education for communities across Kiteto District and beyond. For that period of time,KINNAPA’s WASH interventions have played a transformative role in improving the health, dignity and resilience of rural populations. Key achievements include:
1:Construction of Water Supply Systems: 3 large-scale dams to harvest and store rainwater for multi-purpose use 8 deep boreholes strategically located across communities Extensive pipeline networks distributing water to households and communal access points
2:Domestic Water Access Points:Installation of multiple Domestic Points (DPs) for community-level water access Construction of cattle troughs to reduce animal intrusion at human water points, enhancing water safety.
This longterm effort has been made possible through generous and sustained support from several international partners including NOVIB,WaterAid,WaterCan and Support from NOVIB
From 2016, KINNAPA Development Programme entered a new partnership with Water to Thrive, an organization committed to expanding access to clean water in Africa hence they have worked hand-in-hand to bring sustainable clean water solutions to some of Tanzania’s most underserved rural communities. What began as a strategic response to the chronic water crisis in the Kiteto District has grown into a life-changing initiative, now reaching even further into Kilindi District..
In many rural areas of the Manyara and Tanga regions, families especially women and children walk for hours daily to fetch water often from unprotected and contaminated sources that left them vulnerable to diseases, poor school attendance and missed economic opportunities. Recognizing this urgent need, KINNAPA and Water to Thrive joined forces and work hand-in-hand with local communities to:
Personal hygiene (e.g., hand washing with soap)
Safe water storage and usage
Record keepingEnvironmental conservation and the links between health and sanitation
Our methodology emphasizes:
Safe water storage and usage
Use of appropriate and affordable materials and technology
Capacity building for sustainability
Gender inclusive participation
This ensures that the solutions we deliver are sustainable, relevant and effective in meeting the unique needs of each community we serve.
Since the beginning of WASH Programs in 2016, KINNAPA and Water to Thrive have:
Constructed over 75 clean water access points (73 hand-dug wells and 2 spring boxes)
Reached more than 111,000 individuals across Kiteto and Kilindi districts
Trained dozens of community members and school clubs in WASH practices
Reduced waterborne illnesses, improved school attendance, and sparked small-scale agricultural initiatives powered by accessible water
