Empowering Communities Through Sustainable Solutions

WASH Programme in action – Tanzania

The KINNAPA Development Programme implements transformative WASH (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene) initiatives aimed at enhancing the well-being of rural communities across Tanzania. Our programme focuses on delivering reliable access to clean water, promoting hygiene practices, and protecting local environments.

Since 1998, KINNAPA has been at the forefront of advancing clean water access and hygiene education. Our WASH interventions have improved health, dignity, and resilience across rural populations in some of Tanzania's most underserved districts.

Water to Thrive Partnership

From 2016, KINNAPA partnered with Water to Thrive to expand clean water solutions to Tanzania's most underserved communities. Families in Kiteto and Kilindi districts — particularly women and children — walked hours daily to fetch water from contaminated sources. Through our joint efforts, communities are now equipped with safe water and lasting behavioural change focused on:

  • Personal hygiene and hand washing with soap
  • Safe water storage and responsible usage
  • Record keeping and community accountability
  • Environmental conservation practices
  • Understanding the links between health and sanitation

How We Create Lasting Impact

Safe Water

Ensuring communities have access to safe water storage and guiding proper usage to prevent contamination at the household level.

Appropriate Technology

Deploying affordable and sustainable water solutions adapted to local terrain, resources, and community capacity.

Capacity Building

Training local communities and water committees for long-term system management and sustainability without outside dependency.

Gender Inclusion

Ensuring equal participation of women and men in all decision-making processes, from planning to implementation and management.
